Like many of his colleagues, John Ascik worked at a personal injury law firm before joining EvenUp.
He was given a sample demand letter to review during his EvenUp interview to see if he could identify and correct quality issues. As he identified all the intentional errors, he was impressed with the comprehension of EvenUp’s generated demand—far more precise than other drafting tools he’d encountered.
“This is better—this is the way it should be,” John said about EvenUp’s demand.
John joined EvenUp in June 2023 as a Legal Operations Associate and quickly rose to a Squad Leader for the Legal Operations team. His time at the company has been transformative.
He leads a team of eight full-time employees and three contractors. His team oversees the production of personal injury demands for law firms in over 15 states. His role involves training drafters, maintaining quality standards, and liaising with law firms. He’s also responsible for making strategic decisions on how best to present the clients' stories such that they maximize their settlement outcomes.
At his previous employer, the firm expected him to draft about 10 demands per month. Now at EvenUp, John’s team drafts between 40 and 50 demands per week.
John was recently interviewed about his professional development at EvenUp and shared the following insights on significant ways the company has enabled him to grow as a leader.
Gaining valuable exposure to diverse case experiences
John primarily worked within his home state at his previous law firm. He’s now managed demands in almost all 50 states for EvenUp.
“I’ve learned to navigate motor vehicle laws across the country. I could be a paralegal in over 40 states at this point. Every day presents new challenges, and no two cases are the same.”
This level of variety has accelerated his professional growth, exposing him to legal nuances across multiple regions that most law firm employees would never encounter.
Vast opportunity for hands-on leadership and mentoring
John finds immense satisfaction in mentoring his team as a Squad Leader. He takes pride in helping demand drafters develop into knowledgeable, independent professionals capable of handling complex cases.
John’s hands-on approach to leadership means he is heavily involved in coaching his team to develop strong decision-making and case-management skills.
“I love seeing them reach a level where they make critical decisions independently. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow. I want to help drafters think critically, not just follow steps.”
By nurturing these qualities, John ensures his team is prepared to face any curveballs a demand may throw at them.
Graciously contributing to steer product development
John’s role affords him the opportunity to contribute directly to EvenUp’s product development. He regularly provides feedback to the product team and learning and development team—helping shape how new features and training programs are developed.
“I’ve never had input into product development at any law firm, but at EvenUp, I’m helping shape our tech and improve how we serve clients. It's empowering to know that my team’s insights directly influence the tools we use, making the job easier and more efficient for everyone."
John believes that EvenUp’s recent new product release demonstrates the company’s commitment to empowering personal injury law firms and doing what is right for them on behalf of their clients.
His collaboration extends beyond product development. The Legal Operations team has many opportunities for cross-functional collaboration. They work closely with teams from customer success, marketing, product, and learning and development to optimize the EvenUp customer experience.
Embodying a healthy work-life balance
Like many at EvenUp, John values the company’s flexible work culture. Working from home allows him to set his own pace and take breaks when needed—contributing to his productivity and well-being.
“We’re evaluated on performance, not how long we sit at our desks. If I need a break, I can take one, and I don’t feel guilty about it. Having the freedom to create my own work environment has made a huge difference."
This flexibility allows him to balance his responsibilities as a Squad Leader with personal time, a work-life balance he greatly appreciates.
John appreciates working alongside other Squad Leaders and shares how his hard-working peers support each other.

In just over a year, John has expanded his professional expertise and found a workplace where his leadership skills are recognized and his input is valued. While it’s not easy to be at the forefront of the legal tech industry, John is energized by EvenUp’s mission to challenge the status quo.
"EvenUp is blazing a trail into the future of how legal tech is going to look. We’re designing a way to compete for every person who becomes injured. Historically, the industry hasn’t maximized outcomes for these folks."
